National Assembly to recognise the struggle the presidential
election of June 12, 1993 generated in Nigeria and recognise the day as a
national holiday.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information and
Strategy and a Guest Speaker, Honourable Sunday Akere and Mr Yinka
Anjous at a lecture organised by Modern Progressive Awareness (MPA) held
at Igbonnibi Hall, Ila-Oragun, State of Osun.
Akere charged the people to ponder on the importance of May 29 and June
12 and demand the National Assembly to ratify which of the two days
should be declared as Democracy Day.
According to the Commissioner, June 12 is remarkable in the history
of the nation’s journey to democratic governance, saying if it was not
for the crisis generated by June 12, 1993 election, handing over to
democratic governance on May 29, 1999 would not have been realisable.
Also in his lecture, Anjous said leadership requires a lot of
responsibilities to make people focus in their bid to achieve
self-development and nation building, particularly in a heterogeneous
country like Nigeria.
He also hinged on the need for Nigerians to ask questions from their
leaders, as a way to make leaders responsible and alive to their duties,
rather watch them getting away with corrupt acts.
Anjous also charged political leaders to be passionate about the
plight of their followers, saying many leaders in the past dod not care
about their people, noting that this has limited the level of confidence
people have in government.
In his address, the State Commissioner for Local Government and
Chieftaincy Affairs, Barrister Kolapo Alimi, said even when the people
have been denied access to democratic dividends in the nation’s 15 years
of democracy, it has opened the path to ask questions about governance.
He said the process in the State of Osun has shown that no matter the
shortcoming of civilian rule, it is better than military
administration.
The climax of the programme was the decoration of some individuals
with several awards of excellence in service, notable among them was the
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. (Mrs) Temitope Ilori.
