2015: Governors fail to endorse Jonathan, as Amaechi, Oshiomhole, Okorocha boycott meeting...

For the umpteenth time, Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomhole and Rochas Okorocha of Rivers, Edo and Imo States, respectively, have shunned the meeting of the South-East/South-South Governors’ Forum. The last time the group met in Enugu, the three governors were equally absent.
Similarly, except the trio, the meeting held at the Enugu Government House on Sunday was attended by all the Governors in the two regions.
Those in attendance were Governors Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, Martin Elechi- Ebonyi State, Peter Obi of Anambra State, Theodore Orji- Abia State, Emmanuel Uduaghan- Delta State, Godswill Akpabio- Akwa Ibom State, Liyel Imoke- Cross Rivers State and Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah.
However, unlike Ohaneze Ndigbo, which had earlier in the day endorsed President Jonathan for a second term in office, the governors said the masses would decide Nigeria’s president in 2015.
In a communique read after the meeting by the Cross River Governor, Liyel Imoke, the Governors stated that no group or individual would be allowed to usurp the wish of Nigerians.
The communique read in parts: “After extensive cordial deliberations, the Governors of the South-South/South-East zones resolved to continue to strenghten economic ties between our states and to continue to pursue the development of the zones as well as to prosecute the various infrastructure projects earlier identified.
“We thank Nigerians for their continued support for the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, whom they elected overwhelmingly.
“We urge Mr. President to remain focused on governance and not to allow himself to be distracted.
“We note that the determination of who will be president of this country in 2015 will be made by the Nigerian electorate in line with democratic tenets and the power of the people should not be usurped by any group or individuals”.
“We call for continued dialogue at resolving national issues and the management of the security situation in the country to guarantee the continued corporate existence of our great nation. We commend the security agencies for their efforts in managing these challenges and commend the federal government for the massive reduction in crude oil theft”, the communique added.
While calling on the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end its three-month old strike, the Governors urged the union and other players “to be sensitive to the plight of our children”.

PDP Crisis: I Belong To No Faction – Obasanjo...


OBASANJOFormer President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday asked Nigerians to count him out of any factionalisation of the strife-torn Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking through his chief of staff, Deacon Victor Durodola, the former chairman of PDP Board of Trustees said it was his wish to reconcile the aggrieved in order for the party to remain one.
“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo does not belong to any faction of the party; he is a leader of the PDP. Baba is a former President of the country under the platform of PDP, former chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, you don’t expect him to belong to any faction of the party.
“As far as he is concerned, PDP is one and what is happening is a disagreement within the PDP family; it is a family affair which will soon come to an end. Baba is a mediator and you don’t expect a mediator to take sides in a feud.
“Those who are insinuating that Baba belongs to one faction or the other are missing it. It is his wish that peace and unity return to the party and that is what he is working on till this hour. The idea that some people are after him because of his resolve to end the crisis does not arise. He believes that the party will come out of the crisis stronger,” he said.

Human Rights Activist and President of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), Shehu Sani has that President Goodluck Jonathan must go by 2015, arguing that he has only succeeded in dividing Nigerians more than ever before. He further contended that what the founding fathers struggled for is now being sold to a select few in the name of privatization.
Sani stated this while speaking at a public lecture with the theme, ‘Labour and Democracy: The Recipe for Good Governance’, to mark the formal commissioning of the new secretariat of the Kaduna State chapter of the Labour Party (LP).
“What we have witnessed so far in the 15 years of democracy is dynasty of wealth and power on one side and dynasty of the poor on the other side. Government has turned the state and local governments into personal property, and Nigeria is now in a state where people’s consciences are being bought over,” Sani said.
He, therefore, posited that if the rich and powerful could be united by a common goal, then the poor and downtrodden should equally be united by a common plight, adding that there should be an interlink between the masses of the south and those of the north.
“The widening gap between the rich and the poor and the continuing inequality between the rich and the poor is why Nigeria is still in its present state.
“You cannot revive our industries and the country when corrupt people are still in power, we must rally round and stand for the truth and justice because Nigeria is at cross road, we have wasted the first 100 years of our life as a country, we need to establish a firm foundation for our children.
“It is time to change our future by changing our leaders. The country needs salvation and redemption through a leader that will stand by the masses at all the times, we must be focused and united.” Sani said.
He also called on the northern region to stop being a parasite, depending on other peoples’ resources but instead should be united, focused and learn to feed itself just like it was done by the founding fathers.
Sani stressed that that there is no future in depending on natural resources alone, adding that there are no resources as valuable as population and landmark, which he stressed the northern region is abundantly blessed with.

Former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Hamza Al-Mustapha has said that Asari Dokubo was given a wrong impression of the North by some Northerners which led to his utterance against the region and would soon expose them to the world.

He spoke in Kaduna on Saturday at a rally tagged “National Unity Alliance” which was attended by youth groups from across the nation, saying he, Dokubo and Ralph Uwazurike had agreed to work together towards uniting the youths of Nigeria for national development. He also described Fredrick Faseun, who was at the rally, as a father, saying when he was humiliated and about to be killed, Faseun understood that it was a conspiracy against him by some Nigerians and stood by him.
The rally was also attended by Alhaji Mohammed Abacha who is son to the late head of state, Abacha. Others in attendance included Alhaji Lema Jibrillu who was chairman on the occasion, chieftains from South-South and South-West, among others.
Speaking to the gathering, Al-Mustapha who was accompanied by his wife, said “at the moment there is a big misconception about Asari Dokubo and the South South but I was privileged to get to the root of the matter when I was freed from prison. Asari Dokubo and people from the South-South themselves talked to me about how to unite with the North and so I went after them and I got to the root of the whole issue.
“Asari Dokubo got married here in the north. His first wife was a Fulani by tribe, the second is Shuwa Arab and his children are grand children of the north. What I found out in the course of my visit was that there were some detractors from the north that are misleading him, who misguided and are giving him wrong impression about the North. But Asari Dokubo has seen the light of truth, he has pleaded with the North and is ready to expose the names of these detractors from the North that are going about giving wrong impression of the region,” he said.

PDPThe Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje has said that it has uncovered plots by the Presidency to carry out “Operation Total Crackdown on G7 and their allies in the New PDP”.
The faction, which calls itself “New PDP” alleged that the plan involved the arrest and incarceration of its leadership on trumped up charges.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the New PDP, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka read, “We read the interview of our friend and brother, Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, in the PREMIUM TIMES of 26th September, 2013, confirming that President Goodluck Jonathan is under pressure to arrest former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar without any further delay.
“The sin of these two distinguished Nigerian statesmen, according to those plotting their ‘demystification’, is their alleged support for the New PDP, including the G7 Governors. That this evil plot is being conceived by the Presidency confirms that the Abacha days are truly here again with us,” he said.
The faction noted that in view of the seriousness of the plot to arrest them with disregard to the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, its National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, summoned an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to discuss how best to respond to the situation.
The statement said the NWC resolved at the end of the meeting to forge ahead as no amount of intimidation would deter them, as they are fighting a just cause of “reclaiming, recovering and establishing our party based on the vision of its founding fathers as the party is currently usurped by some members who do not know how it was formed”.
It added that “Baraje, knowing how dirty some of the hawks in the Presidency can fight when pushed to the wall, directed NWC members to write their wills immediately after the meeting as we have entered the stage of no retreat, no surrender – fully determined to reclaim what rightly belongs to us”.
The New PDP lamented what it described as the use of “force” instead of “diplomacy” to resolve the conflict but said it is not disturbed by the latest tactics purportedly adopted by the presidency.
“In this regard, we wish to urge both the Presidency and those detailed to attack us not to waste further time or wait till October 7th to start arresting us as there are thousands of Nigerians ready to step into our shoes and fight this cause to its conclusion”, the statement boasted.
“We are convinced that at the appropriate time; Asari Dokubo will join us when he is convinced as a Social Crusader the injustice we have been subjected to in PDP all these years, so we are not threatened by his outbursts. Our stand is the same as that of late President of the USA, Theodore Roosevelt, who once stated that, ‘Patriotism means to stand by the country’.
“It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him, so far as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise, he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.
“On a final note, we do not know why General Olusegun Obasanjo is being linked with the New PDP. Let us state unequivocally that this foremost nationalist has not in any way – either directly or by proxy – had anything to do with our existence and operations.
“Ridiculing and plotting the arrest of such a distinguished personality that fought to keep this nation as an entity and contributed immensely in making PDP the most vibrant, virile, versatile and biggest political party in Africa is not the best strategy to use to fight the cause of President Jonathan, who knows what Chief Obasanjo did to make him President in the first place,” the statement concluded.

Gunmen open fire on sleeping college students in Yobe....


yobe killingUnder the cover of darkness, gunmen approached a college dormitory in a rural Nigerian town and opened fire on students who were sleeping.
At least 21 died, according to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
The gunmen fired indiscriminately on the male dorm, said Lazarus Eli, a military spokesman. The attack took place at about 1 a.m. Sunday at the College of Agriculture Gujba.
“So far all evidence points to the Boko Haram,” Eli told CNN by phone.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Part of a pattern?
Since 2009, Boko Haram has sown murder and mayhem in Nigeria’s northeastern region. The Islamic militant group’s name translates from the local Hausa language as “Western education is a sin.”
Boko Haram militants often target schools and churches. In 2011 and 2012, Christmas attacks were blamed on them.
Jonathan created a new wing of the military to specifically deal with the insurgency.
In May, Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three northeastern states. He cited “terrorists” who have caused a “a near breakdown of law and order.”
One of the three states is Yobe, where Sunday’s attack took place.
It was the third attack on a school in four months in Yobe.
The ongoing violence in this predominantly Muslim region has claimed thousands of lives.
Meanwhile, human rights groups have accused the military of committing atrocities against civilians.
During a May trip to the country, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Nigeria “has acknowledged that there have been some problems” and was “working to try to control it.”

The monarchical crisis rocking the home of the father of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, assumed a dangerous dimension on Friday.
The new twist the festering crisis took has led to the death of a youth leader, who allegedly flexed muscle with some stern looking soldiers deployed to the locality.
The Eagle Online gathered that the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and father of Okonjo-Iweala, Prof. Okonjo, was to flag off the new yam festival in his domain on Friday before security reports reached him to put it on hold.
It was further gathered that another royal family had planned to unleash mayhem at the ceremony, not because the lineage of the incumbent Obi was not duly elected but that he usurped the throne.
The planned disturbance was also to register the people’s displeasure that the daughter of the Obi (Okonjo-Iweala), despite being an international figure, failed for decades to attract development to her hometown.
Ogwashi-Uku, the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, had, for a long time not had pipe borne water.
In the last 10 years, the town has also not had electricity supply.
Although, the identity of the victim of the recent crisis could not be ascertained as at press time, The Eagle Online gathered that he was shot dead by the soldiers, even as the whereabouts of his body was not known.
Besides the dead victim, several other youths, who had gathered for the new yam festival in defiance of the security warning, were said to have sustained different degrees of injuries.
They are now recuperating at an undisclosed hospital in the council area.
The gruesome death of the victim has triggered another round of crisis in the council area, even as the father of the Minister was said to have hidden his head in the palace for fear of being mobbed.

The frightening dimension the crisis assumed few minutes ago left nothing to be desired as the Minister was accused of being the mastermind of the gruesome murder of a teenager, one Prince Pentty Sunday Chukwu, 15, to please his father, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku.
Okonjo-Iweala was said to be using her federal might to preserve his father’s throne, having been jolted by a court order granted in 2008, restraining her father, his heirs and privies from harassing, intimidating and assaulting a contending family to the throne, the Umudei Royal Family.
Since the father of the Minister was crowned, he has not enjoyed peace for one day, owing to the allegation that he usurped power.
Speaking for the Umudei family, the parallel royal family to Umuobaha, which the Minister’s lineage belongs, Anthony Nti, who is the Secretary of Umudei Royal Family, said the effrontery with which the Umuobaha family mobilized hoodlums and broke into Unudei family palace with vehicles loaded with armed uniformed men to harass and intimidate the elders never happened in the history of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.
According to him, Umudei elders fainted when Pennty was shot amidst his mates – Princes Kingsley Udeh (22) and Bollus Izedunor (23) – in his father’s house at the palace in Ogbe-Nti-Obi.
He alleged that the action of the men in uniform left no one in doubt that Okonjo-Iweala sponsored them.
Nti said: “We were in the palace when suddenly two Hilux pick-ups with these numbers written on the vehicles – 00135 and 00177 – loaded with armed men dressed in army uniform drove into the palace.
“They were brought by one Lemmy and another, all members of Okonjo family.
“As soon as they alighted, the boys became apprehensive and attempted to run away but the uniformed men pursued them and opened fire on them, killing one (Pentty) and injuring the other two (Kingsley Udeh and Bollus Izedunor).
“They (the attackers) took them along and till date we don’t know their whereabouts.
“We boldly wish to state here that the Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, sponsored her father, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, with armed men and wish to add that the police in Ogwashi-Uku is fully aware of the said date.”
While he said their faction (Umudei royal family) has been peaceful in the royal tussle and asking “whether we are still in an era where the father of a big-shot politician or Minister can no longer obeys a court order”, Nti wondered why Prof. Okonjo has no regard for the judiciary.
He added: “One expects that he would have known what it is to disobey a court order.
“We are using this medium, therefore, to call on the government of the day to kindly call the minister’s father to order.
“For now, his men have killed one of us right inside the palace.
“It is hoped that both the federal and state governments should probe into this matter as a soul is already lost.
“We are demanding for justice because this victim was murdered in his father’s house, not on the streets.”
The Eagle Online however gathered that the parallel royal family and the people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom are aggrieved that Okonjo-Iweala, despite being an international figure of great repute, failed to use her position to influence any federal project to where she was born.
Ogwashi-Uku, the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State has since it was known never had pipe-borne water flow in the town and has not had electricity supply in the past 10 years.
The family of the Minister has kept mum over the crisis since Pentty was shot dead by his assailants.

Boko Haram not because of me, says Jonathan...


JONATHANPresident Goodluck Jonathan Sunday said the activities of the BOK Haram sect which has devastated especially the north eastern part of the country is not because of him but is part of international global terrorist network.

Speaking on a nationwide radio/television programme Presidential media chat, President Jonathan also insisted that the House in Apo where some persons were killed by security forces had elements of Boko Haram adding that though innocent persons may have died in the exchange between security forces and the terrorists, it does not mean that innocent persons were deliberately targeted.
“Boko Haram has been there even before I became the president. When the bombed the United |Nations and the barrack in Abuja, we did not have the capacity to tackle them.
But with time, we have built the capacity of the security services and we have made tremendous progress. I am not God so I cannot be everywhere.
What I can promise Nigerians is that within the limit of our ability, we will ensure that we will try our best to ensure that we check the activities of these people and put an end to their activities” he said.
He said though the security services are doing their best to check the activities of the Boko Haram sect, the terrorists are always evolving ways in collaboration with international terrorist organizations to undermine the activities of the security agencies.
Speaking on the recent killings in Apo, President Jonathan said ‘though innocent persons may have died, there were confessions from arrested Boko Haram operatives that there were arms in that building. Where there is a confrontation between security operatives and criminals, innocent persons sometimes fall victims. But definitely, there were Boko Haram elements in that building.
The Boko Haram has links with their network with AlQaeda and other terrorist organizations. Some of the people that were arrested confessed and they were leading them to where they said arms were kept and there was an exchange of gunfire.
In the process some people were arrested some died. I cannot say clearly that all those who died were members of Boko Haram but definitely there were Boko Haram elements there” he said.
Asked to confirm definitely whether the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau was dead, President Jonathan said he cannot say for sure whether the terrorist leader was dead or alive because there is no conclusive evidence to indicate that he was dead or alive.

The APC also alleged that they also plan to use what it has tagged a Third Force to bamboozle Nigerians and project the image of a performing Presidency, even when they admit that the current public perception of government is less than salutary because of its weakness and lack of vision; Engage in the destabilization of the APC using moles and fifth columnists; Instigate chaos in the South-West using what they called the “Old Afenifere Guards”; as well as infiltrate and weaken socio-cultural and socio-political organizations in areas they deemed to be unfavourable to the President jonathanThe All Progressives Congress said it has uncovered a grand and serpentine plot by the Peoples Democratic Party and the Presidency to rig the 2015 general election, especially the presidential poll, and also to destabilize Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the multi-faceted strategy that is being employed by the diabolical duo of the PDP and the Presidency, in their unbridled desperation to win the 2015 elections at all cost, include suppression of votes in areas where the President’s chances are slim, using the police and the military .
The APC also alleged that they also plan to use what it has tagged a Third Force to bamboozle Nigerians and project the image of a performing Presidency, even when they admit that the current public perception of government is less than salutary because of its weakness and lack of vision; Engage in the destabilization of the APC using moles and fifth columnists; Instigate chaos in the South-West using what they called the “Old Afenifere Guards”; as well as infiltrate and weaken socio-cultural and socio-political organizations in areas they deemed to be unfavourable to the President.
Shockingly, the party said, the PDP/Presidency’s grand plot also did not exclude even the PDP itself, as they are pursuing a strategy of decisively and ruthlessly purging from the ranks of the party’s inner decision-making caucus all recalcitrant members, including governors and House of Representatives members.
“The dogged pursuit of this action of dealing with supposed recalcitrant members has led to suspensions, expulsions and alienation of some PDP members, and it was the immediate trigger of the collapse of the party of tattered umbrella,” the APC said. “After all, it is said that a house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Elaborating on the satanic plot, the party said the North-East and the North-West have been singled out as areas where votes must be suppressed in 2015, by creating an enabling environment for the deployment of “special forces” in the run-up to the 2015 elections.
Simply put, the party alleged, they intend to launch police/military actions in the run-up to 2015, to ensure most of the registered voters in the zones are disenfranchised.
The party added: “The reason these two geo-political zones have been singled out for ‘vote suppression’ is because of what the PDP/Presidency called the ‘voting demographics’ in the zones in 2011. The North West had 18,900,543 registered voters in 2011 while the North-East had 10,038,119. By contrast, the President’s ‘safe support base’ of South-South and South-East had 8,937,057 and 7,028,560 respectively, the total of which was less than that of the North-West alone!
“The PDP/Presidency therefore believe that unless the votes in these two zones are suppressed, and those of the South-West (14,298,356) stifled one way or the other, the chances of the President winning re-election are very poor. Needless to say that these three zones (NE, NW and SW) are considered to be hostile to the President, hence must be tamed.”
On the Third Force, the APC said it involves railroading unsuspecting credible and independent-minded Nigerians with deep knowledge of, and extensive penetration of the media, civil society, labour, youth, women and ethnic nationalities into the plan, in which they will be given scripts written by the government and sent out to inundate the airwaves and the print media, posing as experts and public analysts to peddle lies and reel out statistics that have no bearing on the standard of living of the average Nigerian.
The party said perhaps the most dangerous aspect of the plot is the determined attempt by the PDP/Presidency to constrict the democratic space by moving against the main opposition party, which they regard as a “real threat” to the President if it (party) does not implode or forced to break up before 2015.
The strategy to achieve this is multi-pronged, the party alleged: The PDP/Presidency will use those they called fifth columnists, disillusioned party members and ‘deep cover plants’ to fracture the APC; Play up clash of ambitions among its leaders, as well as create and empower a new anti-APC political force in the South-West, comprising the old Afenifere guards whom they described as spent and disillusioned forces, but who can be manipulated to achieve the desired objective of neutralizing the APC; And to revive some dormant political forces.
The APC said while it is not bothered by the desperation of the PDP/Presidency to engage in unfair and foul means to win elections, it is astounded that a democratically-elected President will resort to actions that are far from democratic just to retain power at all cost.
The party said: “The PDP/Presidency should know that no power in the world can stop an idea whose time has come. For Nigeria, this is the time for change, and change will come in spite of the shenanigans of the devilish duo. Our hope is that these desperadoes do not destroy the country in their rabid ambition.”
It called on Nigerians to be vigilant in the days, weeks and months ahead as the PDP/Presidency begin to roll out their grand plot.

Kenya Mall Attack: I Was Not In Kenya – Soyinka Prof.-Wole-Soyinka....

Prof.-Wole-Soyinka,Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has frowned at the headline of a national daily which screamed, “How I escaped Nairobi attack, Soyinka”, saying it was “disrespectful and reductionist.” RELATED POST: How I escaped death in Kenya mall attack –Soyinka

Soyinka added that the headline left a false impression on the minds of casual readers, and banalised both the purpose and tenor of the memorial reading session held in honour of the late Ghanaian poet, Kofi Awoonor, who was among those killed by the recent terrorist siege on the Westgate shopping mall in Kenya.
In a statement, the Nobel Laureate explained that “The circumstances of the Nairobi outrage, the grave issues surrounding this pattern of human negativity, and the stature of Kofi Awoonor in whose honour we were gathered – which constituted the core of my address – deserve worthier treatment than this.”
Soyinka condemned the attempt to attribute sentiments such as “Escaped Attack” to him in the reportage which he described as “highly immoral and unprincipled”.
While decrying the trend to sensationalize reports by publishers in their bid to gain more patronage, Soyinka noted that such “left a false impression on the minds of casual readers”.
“You will have sold a few extra copies of your paper but – is this all that journalism is about? Have we now abandoned all notion of ‘responsible journalism’ on the altar of sales figures?” he asked rhetorically.

Jonathan should ensure I’m not killed — Amaechi amaechi..

amaechiThe Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday raised the alarm over his safety and pleaded with President Goodluck Jonathan, to ensure that he is not killed.

Amaechi said this in an interview with Sahara TV, which was monitored by one of our correspondents.
The governor, who narrated his ordeal in hands of the police and aviation authorities since he fell out with the President, said he felt unsafe.
“I don’t have an aide de camp. I don’t have a chief security officer. They’ve withdrawn so many policemen. They’ve withdrawn all policemen from the commissioners. I feel unsafe. I just know that they want to kill me. Beg Mr. President to ensure that I’m not killed because I’m sure they are planning towards that.”
Amaechi also accused his political opponents, including the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, and the President’s wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, of using the police to intimidate him and the people of the state.
He said, “It is not just Wike that is controlling (the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph) Mbu. It is not just Mrs. Patience Jonathan that is controlling Mbu. There are some people on the street controlling him.
“They are doing two things under the watch of Mr. President and the Inspector-General of Police. They are trying to intimidate the Rivers society so that they can rig elections. And they are trying to intimidate me and expose me to danger.”
Amaechi also accused the National Aviation Management Authority of monitoring his movement and deliberately delaying his flights.
He described the level of impunity under Jonathan as worse than what Nigeria experienced under late General Sani Abacha.
Amaechi said the Nigeria Governor’s Forum crisis would be resolved at the end of the 2015 election, adding that there would have been peace in Nigeria had the President not interfered in the forum’s election.
He told his interviewer that President Jonathan confirmed his involvement in the NGF election at the last meeting the rebel governors had with him.
“While Akpabio was denying it, I reminded him that the President confirmed to me that he participated. Jonathan said he canvassed support for Governor Shema and that he called governors and showed them a video recording of my speech on the oil well that was taken from Soku to Balyesa, and he therefore told them that if I won, he would never work with me,” he said.
He said the possibility of peace between him and the first family was left in the hands of the President and God.
“If the President wants peace, I will be available. And it should not be the type of peace that we had in 2011, that was because of the election,” he said.
In a swift response, the Presidency described Amaechi as a drowning man, whose intention was to pitch the President and Nigerians.
Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, told SUNDAY PUNCH that Amaechi, by his utterances, did not have respect for the office of the President and by extension, the sovereignty of Nigeria.
Gulak said, “Amaechi is a drowning man whose plan is just to pitch the President against the people of Rivers State but people of the state know better and they have turned against him (the governor).
“On his claim that the President is after his life, Amaechi himself knows that President Jonathan is a peace-loving man who cannot hurt a fly. On the contrary, maybe he is the one planning that against the President. He should stop pitching people against the President. Nigerians know the President that he is a gentleman.”

I’m not a man of God – King Sunny Ade....


SUNNYKing Sunny Ade (KSA) was at his best last week when he engaged TADE MAKINDE and Segun Adebayo in an interactive session. He talked about life, what he still wants from it at 67, his pains about Nigeria and new calling, among other issues. Excerpts:
Before now, we’ve heard about your plans to dump secular music for full time gospel ministry. Could you tell us more about this plan of yours?
From the beginning of my life, I have been in the Christianity realm. If you listen to my songs very well, you will discover that 90 per cent of my songs have been about giving praises to God. I have always been closer to the Most High, but many have refused to see it that way.

How long have you been born again, so to say?

I think it is wrong for people to say that I am just getting born again now because I had been born again a very long time ago. It is a pity that people don’t know that I am not the type that makes noise about what I am doing. It remains between God and I whether I am born again or not. How do you want to know whether I am born again? Will it be when I start shouting at every occasion or when I say it in a church? This is not something that should be made public. It is supposed to be between you and God.
Then, why are you making it public now?
Recently, I looked at myself and all what God has done for me over the years and I began to count my blessings. It got to a point that I couldn’t count how much God has blessed me. So, I decided to re-dedicate my life to Christ at the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Why the choice of Redeemed and not the orthodox church where you were born?
What’s wrong with the Redeemed? One thing I want to let you understand is that it doesn’t matter which church you worship. God is one. The church does not count as far as I am concerned. Inasmuch as you are convinced within yourself that the spirit of God dwells in the church, my brother, you can worship there, and anywhere. At the end of the day, God is not going to ask you where you worshipped. Does God care about your church? No.
Evangelist Bola Are said that she heard from God that she should deliver a message to you about God’s calling upon your life. Before she met you to deliver this message, was there any sign to you that something like that was going to happen?
I thank God that people like Mama Bola Are could come out to say something like that had happened. Truth is, she is not the only one to have brought message from God to me, I have heard a lot of people say the same thing over the years. I don’t believe anybody can say God said you should become this or that. These people can only guide you. For instance, if I send you to the world so that you would know how many people are praying for me, or are hearing words from God on my behalf, I am sure that we won’t complete that exercise for the next one year. So, Mama is only expressing her happiness, her joy, to have finally seen me in this position today, worshipping in my own church. I have been active in the work of God for many years and I am not planning to be a pastor, but if God calls me to be anything, I will surely follow Him. The fact still remains that I am yet to hear from God on what step I should take next. People can only tell you things, do this or do that, but you have to be careful and listen to God to guide you through.
But people are already seeing you as a Pastor. Do you see yourself as one?
You can’t just call yourself a man of God. There must be a very strong covenant between you and God before you can claim that you are a man of God. I don’t see myself like that, but if people call me a man of God, it means I have to be very careful because I have not heard from God. All I know is that I am a son of God, not yet a man of God.
You are about to step into that spiritual realm with this new development, how prepared are you for this new challenge?
I have always been a spiritual person and I have been surviving as a spiritual person since I was born.

How do you mean sir?

There is a touch of spirituality about my existence that I can’t even explain, even as I speak with you now, I still can’t explain it. The fact is that I don’t even know how I have been surviving till now. I didn’t study music, nobody taught me music. Nobody taught me how to play the guitar. But I know it has been God all along. Nothing else could have sustained me till now and surely no one has, except God. I think people are still looking at me with the impression they had in those days when I was still looking for fame. Those days, I sang all sorts of songs because I wanted to be famous, especially in Ondo town where they worship Ogun. Every year, we worshipped Ogun in Ondo those days, so I thought that if I sang Ogun songs, people would accept me; buy my album. But it does not mean that I am worshipping Ogun or anything.
To the question: How prepared are you for this phase of your life?
I am prepared for anything knowing very well that God Himself will not watch me fail. As long as you agree to obey God, you have prepared yourself for His work and He will take over from there. He will use you the way He wants to, not the way you want to.
Are we likely to see a complete gospel album from you and what do you think will happen to the secular side of your music career from now on?
If God says I should come and be one of His men, I will gladly take it. But the fact is that you won’t even know about it. If God calls me, I can’t run away from His call. Like I used to say, when we get to the bridge, we will cross it. Only God knows what plans He has for me. He was the one who brought me to this level and I am sure He will see me through another phase of my life.

With the feat you have achieved in the industry, what do you still ask God to do for you?

When I go to sleep every night, my usual prayer is that, ‘God, you have given me the grace to see the end of today, grant me the grace to witness tomorrow. I don’t ask God to give me this or that. If we all ask God for a long life, prosperity and other things that people usually ask, how do you want God to answer all those prayers? (laughs) What do you want the angels to write down?(laughs) The fact is that you will even forget what you have asked God yesterday if you keep asking him different things every day. I always keep it simple with God because He knows all my needs and He alone knows when, how to meet them.

Looking back into your life, what have you gained and lost?

I have gained the mercy of God and grace. Like I told you, I don’t know how I got to this level today. I don’t know why God decided to favour me this way. For the past four days now, I think I slept probably for an hour or so.

Why?

Because I wanted to be sure that everything is in good condition for my birthday celebration. The devil does not want things to go smoothly for anybody, so you have to make sure you defeat the devil at all times. He’s never tired of hurting or destroying. Talking about what I have lost, that should be the current state of the nation. I am sad because Nigeria is not in the position that I met it when I started singing. I had hopes, dreams,but all that is not happening. I know our leaders are trying, but a lot still needs to be done
What inspires you?
The grace of God is so inspiring. Anytime I want to record, I just call my band boys and we will come up with something good at the end of the day. Inspiration comes from everything about life.

How have you been able to keep the KSA brand on top?

The truth is that I wouldn’t have been successful with it if the media had not been my friend. You guys have been so wonderful over the years and that is why I always refer to you as my first friend. It is the media that builds a brand first. But the brand, or people behind the brand also have their roles to play. Any little mistake on the part of somebody known to be close to a brand can have a negative effect. So, the media, staff, friends, clients help to build, sustain a brand and I am glad KSA has not been negatively portayed in, and outside of the region.

Recently, you were in the news doing some stuffs for Coca-Cola in Kenya, could you tell us about that?

I was invited by a friend, David Sanders, a TV presenter in Kenya, but it was sponsored by Coca-Cola. On getting to Nairobi, I discovered that Coca-Cola had already erected a Coke Studio in Kenya. It’s a different style entirely. These days, musicians don’t have other jobs than to go to the studio, handle the computer and record. If you tell the same musician to come and perform live, it becomes a problem. Coca-Cola said they were looking for the present generation to plan ahead for future generation by fusing the old and new music. They want us to work together so that musicians, either old or young, can have something to fall back on at the end of the day. It was an opportunity for me to blend. I told them that I wanted artistes of all genres of music to work with me.

Flavour was with you in Kenya. How was it working with him?

He was great. So were the other artistes, they were all great.

You are the real global name after Fela, do you see this as a burden?

It is not a burden. It is like I am moving from one class to another one. I don’t know which lecturer I am going to meet when I get there. That is why I love to work with everybody. My brand would not have been successful or popular, but for the support of the media, I am where I am today. I have said that before. So, whatever class I find myself, I am always ready to learn from everybody, especially from the press. I have learnt a lot from you today with the way you asked your questions,and even the suggestions you have given. That is why I always perform very well because you have educated me a lot.

Boko Haram invades S/West for bulletproof charms •Offers N10m for each potent, tested charm •Security agencies caution native doctors..

AS the military assault against the Boko Haram sect continues in some Northern states, members of the sect might have concluded plans to infiltrate the South-West to seek traditional medicine protection from gunshots. BOKO HARAMSunday Tribune gathered that the last few weeks have seen large-scale efforts being made by people believed to be members of the sect to contact native doctors in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, especially Saki, for bulletproof charms.
Incidentally, Saki and some other Oke-Ogun towns have a very strong Islamic orientation with a large population of northerners, especially cattlemen, already making the area a home.
According to a source who claimed to be in the know about the recent attempt to seek Yoruba traditional protection by the Boko Haram members, a huge amount of money ranging from N5 million to N10 million was said to be on offer “if the amulet is made and tested okay.”
“Recently, some strange people have been coming to Oke-Ogun for traditional bulletproof and most of these people are Northerners, though their contact persons are Yoruba. What we learnt was that anyone that facilitates the Boko Haram’s contacts’ meeting with a herbalist, who could make a potent charm would also get a commission of 40 per cent, with the remaining 60 per cent going to the herbalist,” the source said on condition of anonymity.
He noted that the state of emergency in some states of the North and the strict surveillance on the sect coupled with the widely known efficacy of Yoruba bulletproof charms could have been responsible for the sect’s search in Oke-Ogun, warning traditionalists to be discerning “so as not to empower destroyers who will return to haunt them and their communities in the distant future.”
When contacted on the development, the Oyo State Director of State Security Services (SSS), Mr Charles Ugwu, told Sunday Tribune that he was not aware of it.
He added that he believed the native doctors knew what had been going on in the nation, and if approached by suspected Boko Haram members, they should give information to their community leaders or approach the security agencies in their zone.
Ugwu pointed out the presence of security agencies in Oke-Ogun axis which included an army battalion, police division, Directorate of State Services and Operation Burst, among others, which could be reached by members of the public to give valuable information that would aid security.
Also, the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, said that it was good that the police command was receiving the information, while she called on members of the public generally and residents of Oke-Ogun area in particular to avail the police the vital information on the presence of the people in their localities.
“If they don’t, it is like a time bomb which would affect many if not detonated quickly, so they should not hide such information. We assure them that their identities will be well protected.
They can also send letters stating the information they wish to give,” she added.
The PPRO stated further that the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa had already instructed police officers all over the state to look into the piece of information and act on it immediately.

I wanted Abiola to head Interim Govt, says Babangida abiola...

Former President Ibrahim Babangida has said after the annulment of the June 1993 election by his government, he wanted the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Abiola, to head the interim government. This is contained in a book, Ibrahim Babangida: The Military, Politics and Power in Nigeria, written by Dan Agbese, editor-in-chief of the defunct Newswatch magazine. According to the book, Babangida said he contributed to the campaign fund of the late business mogul.
Babangida, in an interview, told Agbese that he had wanted to make Abiola the chairman of the Transitional Council because he believed he (Abiola) “enjoyed tremendous political goodwill. His name was a household name. He had the international contact and Nigeria too had a very good chance of having someone like him heading that organisation.”
He, however, claimed that his colleagues on the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), the country’s highest decision making body, opposed the choice of Abiola to head the council. Instead, they agreed to accept him as a member of the council.
The former military president said he offered to bring the late Abiola in as a member and ensure that the members of the Transitional Council elect him as chairman.
According to the book, the AFRC had decided that the chairman of the council should come from the South West. However, Abiola kicked against this and insisted that he should be announced as the leader. He was quoted as telling Babangida that his family wanted it because they feared that the president might change his mind once he made him just a member.
“Left to me, I wanted to make him the chairman. Then he decided and blew it.”
On the contest that led to the emergence of Abiola, Babangida said, the disqualification of 23 presidential aspirants led to the emergence of two candidates of two candidates- Abiola and Bashir Tofa- on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and National Republican Convention (NRC).

Founder of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPV), Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, was in his elements, spitting fire in an explosive interview in today’s edition of The Nation on Sunday. He spoke of his people’s alleged desire for Nigeria’s separation, as well as on burning political issues – everything from ongoing infighting within the Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2015 ambitions to the insurgency in the North East. Excerpts: What is your assessment of the Amnesty Programme?
For me the way the amnesty programme is being managed, it has brought a lot of positive result. A lot of people have been trained; there has never been any adult scholarship programme in Nigeria that has trained as many people as the amnesty programme has done. A lot of people have been given a new lease of life; a lot of people have changed for the better.
Are you satisfied with the programme so far?
I think the name amnesty should be changed. It should be a collective programme for the people of the oil-bearing communities in Niger Delta. It is wrong for you to single out a group of people. These people when they started their agitation, according to them, they were not agitating for themselves, they were agitating on behalf of the people, so you cannot go on and give them a bribe (amnesty programme) in total exclusion of the people they claimed they were fighting for. And it is also wrong for them to accept the amnesty because they were delegates and they considered themselves as delegates, so they were on errand for the people. So, morally it is wrong. So, the programme should be given to the oil-bearing communities and not the whole of Niger Delta. It should be given to communities who have suffered deprivation, degradation of their environment and social dislocation.
Are you suggesting expanding the scope of the amnesty?
Yes, the amnesty programme, as presently constituted, is criminalised because first, you have to demoralise the people, criminalise the people to grant them a pardon, which is wrong. Then the people who accept amnesty have betrayed the people because when they started they said they were fighting on behalf of the people, so if you go and accept benefit and that benefit does not translate to the improvement of lives of those people, then you have betrayed the people.
Is it in terms of benefit they have betrayed the people?
Yes, it is in terms of benefit because if they take the amnesty, they go for training and they are paid N65,000 while the generality of the people who they claimed they were fighting for did not have such benefit.
In spite of the programme, we still have prevalence of oil theft and people are now saying the amnesty is not succeeding. What is your take on this?
That is why the amnesty is wrong, the amnesty is immoral. It is for 30,000 people as against the millions of people from the oil-bearing communities. Why were they singled out? Other people said, “Oh, so una dey give them bribe, oya now, make we see whether that bribe go work.” So the people own the oil, they own the land in which the oil comes from and if they single out other people and give them and leave others, then they will take from the pipeline because everything you are saying is in the pipeline.
Are ex-militants behind oil theft?
I don’t know who a militant is; I have never known them. I don’t know the meaning of militant and I have never known that word. I have never even checked it in the dictionary.
What will you call those who have been agitating in the Niger Delta, including those in your group?
Was Mandela called a militant? Was Kwame Nkrumah called a militant? If they did not call Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah and even Saro Wiwa a militant, why should I be called a militant? I am not a militant and I don’t know the meaning of militant.
Are you a revolutionary?
Yes, I am. Revolution means violent action towards change.
Now, the amnesty programme has a timeframe…
I don’t know. The question is not for me because I took the government of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to court challenging him under the constitution of Nigeria whether he had the power to grant amnesty…he did not have the power to. I took him to the Federal High Court in 2009.
In spite of that they are still running the programme. Why are you still making an issue out of it?
That is because Nigeria is a lawless country. The whims and caprices of individuals cannot now become law. Yar’Adua cannot be moving on the street of Abuja and then see me and say: ‘I have granted you amnesty because you are from the Niger Delta and you look like a militant.’
I thought you were part of the deal
I am shocked and it shows that you didn’t read my write up because if you did, you would have known that I took them to court. You would have known that I refused to be given pardon and I have not accepted pardon from anybody because I have not committed any crime and I am not a militant.
Due to oil theft, multinational companies are trying to disinvest in the Niger Delta. Are you not concerned about this?
Very good! They should leave, that is what we have been praying for. They should not just disinvest onshore, they should also disinvest offshore.
Who will manage our oil considering that they have the technical knowledge?
Who said we want them to manage any oil? Nobody said so. We don’t want our oil to be used, our environment to be degraded, our people to suffer from all sorts of diseases occasioned by oil production and exploitation. If they stop, good for us.
How will Nigeria manage its oil sector or take over?
What is my business? Why would Nigeria come and take over what is in Buguma, did I go to take over what is in Kano? Why should Buguma matter be different from Kano or Sokoto? Why would the governor of Adamawa talk about Buguma when I don’t have anything to do in Yola?
These are natural resources that belong to the people of Buguma, how would you exploit them?
Buguma people are not ready to exploit it now. When they are ready, we will, but for now we don’t want anything. If they are going, we will applaud them. There is no reason whatsoever for you to exploit my resources to come and develop Abuja. I support convocation of Sovereign National Conference which is the simple minimum demand we are making.
What about true federalism?
I don’t know anything about that because in dictionary, I have never seen any word like true federalism as illiterate as I am, but there is federalism. Nigerians cannot be creating words to the exclusion of the whole world. We know what federal system of government and unitary system of government are, there is nothing like true federalism. You are a federation and even if you are, the people must agree to be Nigerians and we have never sat down to agree. Nations are not built by one Lugard or when someone says from today, you people are Nigerians. That is what is wrong with Nigeria.
But the argument of the government is that there can’t be two sovereignties?
We have gone past that. The president said he is not averse to the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference. The president of the Senate, David Mark, has come out and said national conference is necessary. So, we are getting nearer. Those of us who have been shouting on top of our voice are coming nearer and closer. Sovereign National Conference, I pray, will be convened in my lifetime. That is my ultimate dream. By that time, I will campaign among my people for what we want and what we want is independence. After the independence we will go our separate ways peacefully so that we will not be hearing about Boko Haram or MEND which will be a Niger Delta problem and from there, it will become an Ijaw problem. I cannot be carrying other people’s burden.
Does that mean you don’t mind if the nation is dismembered?
I am the first person who advocated it to the Supreme Court and that was why I was put on treason trial. My belief, aspiration or prayer is that Nigeria should be dismembered. This Nigeria, I don’t want it.
What is really wrong with Nigeria having come such a long way?
We didn’t come anywhere. Somebody cannot just say from today you are Nigerians. Why? What power does he have? Is he God? And he says he’s an English man. Do you know that anybody who calls himself a Nigerian is an inferior person? How can someone just look at you and call you a Nigerian and so you are?
I thought there is now equity in Nigeria since power has shifted to the South-South?
If power has shifted to the South-South and one man or some people say if Jonathan wins the PDP primaries by default or by any other means, he will fail at the general election… and if he wins, they will make the country ungovernable and now they have fulfilled their words of making the country ungovernable. Kano and Jigawa states’ governors have clearly said if Goodluck gets PDP ticket, they are going to disgrace him at the general election – which they cannot. So they have continued in their drumming of crisis and war. They failed in 2011 and they are going to fail in 2015. So, why would you want to be part of a country where some people think they are born to rule?
But I thought at a stage, you granted an interview and you had some grouses against the president and his re-election bid?
You did not read my interview, if you had read my interview, you won’t say so. I can quote my words as printed by PUNCH Newspaper. If some people decide to say what they like, that is their business. This is what I said and thank God, book no dey lie. It was published in PUNCH on the 22nd of December 2012.
I said: “First, there was no need for Jonathan, whatsoever, to disagree with Obasanjo. I don’t like Obasanjo, I don’t like his face, I hate him, but he was instrumental to bringing Jonathan to power. And the greedy people around Jonathan have not managed him well enough to prevent an open clash between him and Obasanjo. And if you check, all the people who supported Jonathan and fought to bring him to power have openly disagreed with him, what were the causes of these disagreements? These are the questions we want to put to the president. It is alarming because the South-South must have its uninterrupted eight years’ tenure which is constitutional, but with how things are going under Jonathan, we are afraid that we may not be able to have our eight years, because there will be no magic about it, if it is going to be one-man-one-vote.
“Some people say Obasanjo is manipulating Jonathan, that is why Jonathan is disagreeing with him, and we ask: ‘what has Jonathan’s government achieved to show that it is a departure from other governments that have existed since 1956?’ For us, nothing has changed. It is still business as usual. So, what is the advice that Obasanjo gave to Jonathan that is so difficult for him to fulfill, that made him to decide to fall out with the former president? Obasanjo was instrumental to and manipulated the process that illegally removed Diepreye Alamieyeseigha as the governor of Bayelsa State and installed Jonathan as governor, then made him vice-president, fought for him to become acting president and also fought for him to become President of Nigeria. Apart from Obasanjo, there are so many people who supported Jonathan; some have been pushed out by those who were not there to give him any support, while some others are trapped and they cannot talk.
“The problem is that the president is surrounded by very greedy people who do not want him to make any progress. I have known the president for more than 20 years, and I know he is very simple and humane, but he has allowed himself to be imprisoned by the people around him, and this is what we are saying that the situation must stop. After the election and before his swearing-in, I granted an interview where I said that if Jonathan failed to perform in six months, he would lose all the goodwill, and today as we can see, the president is losing all the goodwill. The social media was one of the avenues the president used to come to power, but today, anywhere you go on the social media, he is being called all sorts of names: clueless and other derogatory names. We cannot continue to take punches for the president when he has refused to wear his gloves. The president is removed from his own people, his people do not have access to him; so, people like us who have access to him become targets. When Joseph was sold into captivity in Egypt, from slavery to prison and from prison he became a prime minister, the first thing he did was to invite his family from Israel to Egypt to come and partake in his new-found glory.
“There is something wrong somewhere, the people around the president have fenced him and put him in ‘Kirikiri Prison’ so that he cannot even see his direct family. I have complained to Ijaw elders, that I cannot keep quiet over things that I have seen, and they say I should wait. I am asking here, how long will we keep quiet? Our people now feel that we are at the riverside and yet use spittle to wash our face. People are dying on the East-West Road, Jonathan and (Godsday) Orubebe are doing nothing. Both of them will account for the deaths on the road. I continue to be an advocate of an eight-year presidency in the South-South and eight years in the South-East because the old Eastern Region was the most deprived region in this country if you consider the people that have ruled this country.” So, how was I against the president? People continue to quote me wrongly and say I am against Jonathan.
Are you still standing by some of these observations?
Yes! Go to the East-West road now, something massive is going on and it is almost completed. You can drive from Port Harcourt to Elele, from Warri to Ughelli, work is also ongoing. So, if I said something in December last year and after I said it, the Catholic Bishop said it also at the funeral of Azazi, Amaechi said it and different socio-cultural organisations including the Council of Warlords said it. They reechoed what I have said.
Does it mean the president is responding?
Yes, he is responding not only to the road but on a lot of vital issues.
On what basis does Jonathan deserve a second term?
He deserves a second term first. No apologies. He is an Ijaw man like me; he deserves it and no apologies whatsoever. Second, which is most important to any other person is: when the colonialist left, they left functional railways, but before Goodluck came to power the railways were dead. When the colonialists were leaving, they left functional agriculture but all of them died before Goodluck came to power. Today, agriculture is being revived. During Obasanjo’s eight years, you could not travel the Ore-Benin road; it was a death trap but today the road is open and people are travelling. Go to Oyo-Ilorin road, it has been expanded and people are travelling.
Obasanjo awarded Abuja-Lokoja road at an unbelievable amount but construction did not go beyond two to three kilometres. Yar’ Adua came and he did not do anything. But now the road is near completion. Direct foreign investment has increased. So, if, from 1956 to 2010, they were not able to achieve anything and somebody in a space of three years has changed these things and has achieved so much, then if you add all of them together, they have not achieved as much as what Jonathan has achieved in three years.
That means you are not disturbed by the activities of the G-7 PDP governors and the Baraje faction?
They are political miscreants because there is no faction in the PDP. PDP is the PDP and there is only one PDP recognised by the law. What they are doing is illegal and against the law.
But the same president is holding peace talks with them
That is why we are angry with Jonathan. Why should the president hold meeting with them? The president should put them where they belong.
Where do they belong?
Where they belong is to be chased from the PDP and those of them that do not have immunity, the full weight of the law should be brought against them and they should be dealt with decisively.
But the fear is that they can stop the president
How? Did the president win in Kano, Sokoto, Niger, and Jigawa in 2011?
But he won in Kwara?
Yes, and he is going to win in Kwara, he will win in Niger now clearly and he will win more votes in Kano. He will win. Did Kwankwaso people not print his poster with Buhari in 2011? Did Kwankwaso support Goodluck? If it is Lamido, yes, we agree, but did the support translate into victory? So all this bragging is nothing. Did Amaechi bring any vote? I was the chieftain of ACN, all other parties scored zero. Goodluck scored 100% vote in my ward. There were agents for all the parties but in my ward, every party scored zero, they didn’t score one vote. Did Amaechi bring it or did he come near my ward? Amaechi cannot even win in his unit; he does not have the capacity to win election even in his unit.
We are waiting and we pray to God to keep us alive till 2015, then you will come and see if Amaechi can win in his unit in 2015 and not to talk of his ward. In the last election, didn’t you hear what they did to a policeman in Amaechi’s town? How police officers were stripped naked by the people of his community. He is not able to control his community and he wants to rule Rivers State. Look at people they are training in Kano for martial art, if I do it in my school they will say I am training militia.
You seem to have no fear about 2015, what is the secret?
I don’t have any fear, except for what God will do and Goodluck will not be alive which we pray that God will not at this time that he has brought us to a reasonable level of development. Goodluck will not leave us mid-stream, he will take us to the shore because 2015 is a foregone conclusion. There is going to be political cemetery for many political heavy weights where we are going to inter them because Goodluck is going to demystify everybody. People should not be afraid. And for the men of God that said God sent them, people will know that God did not send them.
How about this coalition of opposition coming together to form All Progressives Congress, you were once in their midst, what happened?
I was, because we shared the same political belief, ideology and aspiration but if somebody leaves that platform to join people who are conservative and you want me to join them I cannot. I saw NPN as a young man before I joined UPN, and I became the youth leader of UPN in Degema community. I saw PDP before I joined AD, I saw PDP before I joined ACN. So, if you now merge the PDP elements with yourself and you want me to join, why would I join? That is not the political ideology I saw and joined.
Would there really be war if Goodluck does not win in 2015?
Goodluck’s winning is a foregone conclusion. He will never lose, Insha Allah. It is they who said if he wins, they will make the polity ungovernable. So it is they who will bring the war and we will reply them. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. They said the baboons and the dogs will be soaked in the street. We will help them to soak the street with more blood. I have no apology for that as I said on Channels TV. As you prepare for war, you think say me I go sleep? No, me too dey prepare. Allah said in the Quran, ‘they plotted and we too are plotting, we are the best of plotters.’ So, if you plot to soak the blood of the dogs and baboons, should we fold our hands and expect them to come and kill us? No, it is not possible.
Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has been trying to assist the president by convening peace talks to meet with feuding members of the PDP, but some people are saying…
Don’t say some people; I was the first person who came out to say that Obasanjo is the agent provocateur. I was the first person who said Obasanjo is the instigator. Atiku has also come out to say Obasanjo is the one; Atiku who is a co-conspirator. Obasanjo is an insatiable man.
How?
Let me tell you a secret, when Yar’Adua was there, I met with his then Chief Economic Adviser, Tanimu Yakubu. Please, write it the way I said it. He (Tanimu) came to meet me in my hotel room and said, the place Obasanjo put you, you will go back there. Tanimu is alive, if he fears God, he will not deny it. If Yar’Adua had continued, Obasanjo would have been in jail and he knows that. So whatever thing Obasanjo and Goodluck are doing together (like the friction), I don’t know. But I know that Obasanjo has not been fair to Goodluck. I have known Goodluck for over twenty years; I don’t know what Obasanjo tells Goodluck because Goodluck has not told me. When I said Goodluck had no business quarrelling with Obasanjo, one Yoruba retired military officer called me on phone and spoke with me for more than one hour. He said Obasanjo is a fox. He said he has known Obasanjo for as long as his adult life and he knows that Goodluck has not done anything against Obasanjo. He said Obasanjo’s life is about constant plotting and betrayal; that is what the general told me.
When you came from the creek and met Obasanjo at the Villa, what was your impression of him?
Was it not after I met with him and gave out about 3200 firearms and over 300 ammunition and bombs that he invited me to the police station and arrested me and threw me into prison? Is that a man to be trusted? He did not honour his own part of the agreement, he cannot honour because he believes in brute force and anyone who is dealing with him should also deal with him that way. Obasanjo has no business being free and moving freely for all that he stole. For the destruction of Odioma, Zaki Biam, he has no business walking free. I have been in court over Zaki Biam and Odioma. Our court system or judiciary is so bad and corrupt that any case they don’t want, they don’t listen to it.
How should the president manage Obasanjo?
I don’t know how he should manage Obasanjo but I believe that the president ought to take Obasanjo for what he is and subject him to the scrutiny of the law.
But will that be fair to President Jonathan’s predecessor and mentor?
If a mentor has turned an enemy, what would you do? You will allow him to continue to breed crisis that occasions loss of lives and properties?
What is your opinion about the spate of violence in the north and even the recent incident in Kenya? How can we curtail terrorism in this country?
It is a global problem. It is a clash of civilisation; Islamic civilisation and the Jewish-Western civilisation controlled by the Jewish Masonic order. Islam is the only other ideology that has refused to succumb to the Jewish Masonic order and for that, Muslims are being oppressed all over the world. America invades Muslim countries, they kill Muslims at will, promoting Jewish Masonic order, promoting Zionism. Strangers were brought from Europe and put on Arab land, they confiscated a cage and put Arab in an open prison and concentration camp. Arabs were not Hitler. If Hitler put Jews in concentration camp, is that why Arabs have to be put in concentration camp in Gaza where they cannot go out? Today in Libya, there is no peace and development, they destroyed Libya. In Egypt now, election was won by the Muslim Brotherhood’s Justice and Freedom Party, but they overthrew the government and killed thousands of people. America is talking about killing of people with gas but somebody came out openly to shoot people in the full glare of international television and nothing is done about it. They unleashed on Syria their dogs and thugs to perpetually keep the Muslim land unstable. Let America mind their business and the world will have peace.
Is terrorism the solution considering the fact that Islam is a religion of peace?
If they attack you, will you not attack back? Islam does not support a person to go to a shopping mall to go and kill people. That is cowardice. You cannot kill unarmed people but we should also know that when somebody is frustrated, he can do anything.
Back home, how do we resolve the issue?
Nigerian matters or crises? The people that should be arrested and brought in for questioning are the Kaitas and the Ciromas. They should be arrested because they are the people who promised mayhem in 2011 and the mayhem is taking place in their home. “He who rides on the back of a tiger, e go easy to end up for tiger belle.”
Does that mean there is political undertone in all these crises in the north?
Yes, they thought that they could control these elements; they didn’t know that there are some people you cannot control. They want to use them to exact confusion…that is what these political miscreants led by the so-called seven governors are doing. They want the president to say he will not contest for second term. It is the same Boko Haram demand which Dr. Ahmed Gumi said, once the president says he is not contesting, Boko Haram insurgency will end. So there is a connection with what the seven governors are demanding and Boko Haram. There is a connection because they encourage them.
But the president is trying to reach out to them but they are not embracing it?
That is what we are saying, the president is wrong. He should leave them alone, let them do their worst. Where they go pass impeach Jonathan now? There are certain things they cannot imagine not to talk of doing. The president should not bother himself about them. How many times did they try to impeach Obasanjo? Mark my word, Goodluck Jonathan will win. If he won with 6 million votes before, he will win now with 10 million.
What do you make of the political tension in the country?
Don’t allow a man who you think is a weak man to wake up; don’t force him to wake up. When a man is sleeping, don’t force him to wake up. When someone is sleeping and you keep tapping him, when he wakes up, he will become wild. Don’t wake a sleeping man because the claws of government, when he digs it inside their flesh, it will rip off their flesh. When you force a man to do what he does not want to do… In Nigeria, you can only compare Goodluck with ex-President Shehu Shagari. These people are easy going people and when you continue to criticise him, you are giving chance to those of us who are extra-extremist to be telling the president to behave like a president and then his name will change from ‘clueless’ which they have started and they have changed to ‘bully’ and from ‘bully’, he will be called ‘dictator.’ That is what will happen. As for governors Adams Oshiomole and Rotimi Amaechi they have calculated well; they are thinking of post-2015 politics. If Goodluck is president till 2019, Amaechi will be out of power from 2015 to 2019. Even if he goes to the Senate, he will not be anything but an ordinary floor member. But if Goodluck goes, he will either become the Vice President or the Senate President. All he (Amaechi) is thinking about is manipulation. For Oshiomole, he is from the South-South and he is in the political cooler because there will be no election in the next three years and maybe by then, he will lose political relevance and he does not want that to happen. It is not like the United States of America where if you are a democrat, you are a democrat. So they have calculated and it is their personal greed they are pursuing.
Where did you get this inspiration to be a revolutionary?
I grew up under my grandmother and my grandmother was the transition between the glorious past of our people. That was when our people were free. My grandmother was born on the 22nd of November 1900. Her grandfather was King Amakiri. He died and was buried on the 15th of November 1900. My grandmother lived in a world where she saw and owned slaves, she had people serving her but all that came to an end with the coming of Nigeria. When my mother had me unlike my other siblings, I was taken to my grandmother and she taught me the lessons that I still carry with me. She said, “Do everything to restore the glory of the past.”
Was she the one who sent you to school?
I attended primary one to four before my father came back from law school, but as at that time I had been given enough education by my grandmother and then I became close to radical political ideology from Iran and Libya. I visited the late Muammar Ghadaffi in Libya several times because he was my political mentor and he was one of the greatest men God has created on earth. He was the greatest lover of Africa. I have never met anybody who loves Africa as much as Ghadaffi. I got to know about this through my interaction with him. When you speak with someone, you will know his passion. I used to talk to him into the wee hours of the night and he hardly spoke English with anybody but I forced him to speak English with me. He understood English very well but he brought someone to translate and I persuaded him to speak with me in English. Ghadaffi used to see me as one of the hopes of Africa and he had connection and interaction with Nelson Mandela and all the genuine freedom fighters in Africa. My interaction with these people who love freedom has really influenced my life.
Were you born into Islam?
I became a Muslim on the 17th of September 1988 at Calabar. I was influenced by the Iranian Revolution and it was the greatest influence because I have always detested America. I have always detested the bullying and the double standard of America. So when the Iranian Revolution started, I started reading about Islam and I later became a Muslim.
Is your being a revolutionary for personal gain because people say ex-militants are now moneybags?
I don’t know what ex-militants are, so when you are talking with me, you should know the word to use. I am 50 years old and I come from a background of kings who ruled their country until 1899 when Britain cajoled them to sign their protectorates to become Nigeria. So if I had come from United Arab Emirate, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, and I am a prince, what will I be called? Are you saying that I should not fight to restore that sovereignty? I am an Amakri, I don’t know where I get money from. So the Otedolas, the Adenugas, the Dangotes are entitled to have wealth from the resources from my place but I don’t have the right to make money. The very purpose of my struggle is to free my people and restore the totality of what belongs to us. We want our sovereignty and wealth, so those who are from poverty stricken places, those who ordinarily would have been slaves should keep on wallowing in their poverty and slavery. There is no reason for Mike Adenuga to have money while the son of Saro-Wiwa does not have. It is immoral and unjust.
They sign pieces of paper and give them oil blocks just like that to go and take resources from another man’s backyard because it is Nigeria. Some of them have never been to the places where they have these oil blocks and their accounts are fatter daily to the shock and sweat of other people.
Are you saying there is nothing wrong with ex-militants getting pipeline or maritime protection contracts?
Who should be given the contract? If Tompolo is not given contract, who should be given? If they are giving any Niger Delta contract, who is more qualified to have it?
Is it not the job of the NNPC?
Is it not the job of NNPC to explore oil, why should Dangote and Otedola be given an oil blocks? Is it not the job of NNPC to explore oil? Tompolo is a citizen of Nigeria and is expected to have equal access to wealth that is exploited from his back yard. The pipeline contract that I was given has been terminated since July 2012. Am I dead now? I am alive and I am still going to be alive. They don’t understand me, if they do, they won’t say what they are saying. Obasanjo gave me endless opportunities to become so many things and I rejected them. People have become rich overnight because of this amnesty and if I was after money, I would have embraced it. Is the north not demanding for amnesty to collect free money? How many can do what I did? When you accept pardon, it shows that you committed a crime. Who was more popular than myself in the Niger Delta? If they are claiming amnesty, I should be the first to claim it. The day Tompolo came to handover, Yar’Adua said one person is still remaining, but I refused because I am not a militant. So, money is not the issue because I was born to be rich.

Anambra 2014: Why I resigned as Ngige’s Campaign Coordinator – Senator Annie Okonkwo...


sen. okonkwoDeputy National Chairman (South), of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Annie Okonkwo, has defended his resignation as the Chairman/Campaign Coodinator for Anambra governorship election, saying it has nothing to do with his membership of the party.
Okonkwo stated this in Lagos during an interview with journalists.
Speaking on his resignation, Okonkwo said: “As the Deputy National Chairman (South), of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), my job is not just to see about Anambra State but since I was appointed the Chairman/Campaign Coordinator for Anambra governorship election, I have not been able to visit other states of Southern Nigeria and the 2015 election is approaching.”
According to him, “I need to visit other states of the South to sensitise the people of the area more about our great party, the All Progressives Congress.”
The Sixth Republic Senator however, disclosed that his action was for the interest of the party, adding that he is still committed and loyal to the party.
Okonkwo whom many believe has sacrificed a lot for the party, said he has never regretted anything he has done for APC and that he will continue to do more. Okonkwo also promised that he will always make himself available for the party and will always involve in anything that would move the party forward.

DEPORTATION OF IGBOS: Southeast groups reject Fashola’s apology...


fashola ndigboA coalition of eight South-East rights groups has dismissed the apology tendered by Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola over the July 14 deportation of alleged destitute Igbo.
In a joint public statement released this afternoon in Onitsha, Anambra State, the group rejected the apology, dismissing it as insincere and politically motivated. The statement was signed on behalf of Southeast G8 Rights Coalition by Emeka Umeagbalasi for Intersociety; Comrade Aloysius Attah for Civil Liberties Organization, Anambra State Branch; Comrade Samuel Njoku, for Human Rights Club of LRRDC, Anambra State Branch; Comrade Justus Uche Ijeoma, for Society Watch (a membership project of Intersociety, Nigeria); Dr. Rufus Duru, for Global Rights & Development International; Comrade Emma Onwubiko, for Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria; Comrade Peter Onyegiri, for Center for Human Rights & Peace Advocacy; and Comrade Ifeanyi Onuchukwu, for Humane Justice International
The coalition, according to a copy of the statement made available to News Express, “wishes to reject in its entirety the September 26, 2013, “apology” tendered by the Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria over his abominable deportation of 72 Igbo-Lagosians from Lagos to the Upper Iweka area of Onitsha, Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria. The punishable act took place on July 24, 2013 at about 3: am or the hours of the blue law (a period prohibited by nature for conduct of official government affairs or transaction of its official business).”
The rest of the statement reads as follows: “It is recalled that seventy-two (72) Nigerians of Southeast Igbo extraction resident in various parts of Lagos State were rounded up between December 2012 and January 2013 at Lagos roads’ bus stops and its streets by the operatives of Kick Against Indiscipline working for Governor Fashola’s administration and detained illegally and solitarily without trial for over six months on the orders of the Governor, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (a supposedly law lord). They were held in an illegal detention premises located close to a border between Lagos and Ogun States.
“In the evening of July 23, 2013, they were told to prepare to be taken back home in their Lagos residences and asked to put their names in a sheet of rough paper. Suddenly, four commuter buses with two truckload of anti riot police personnel stormed their illegal detention premises. The two trucks were marked “Rescue Operation” of the NPF, donated by LASG (Lagos State Government). They were commanded to enter the buses, after which, they found themselves under the Upper Iweka Flyover Bridge in Onitsha at about 3: am. By day break, 54 of them with undisclosed social identities had escaped, leaving behind 18, who looked hungry, tired, medically and psychologically challenged.
“In the Nigerian legal system applicable to Lagos State, anti wandering, begging and public nuisance offences are usually treated as statutory and strict liability offences (usually no mens rea and witnesses are required during summary court prosecution). In other words, such offences usually receive summary court trials and lighter punishments like fines, rehabilitation and jail sentences for days, weeks and months. They share common boundaries with sanitary and traffic offences. The major safeguards for these categories of offences are the Fundamental Human Rights provisions in the Chapter Four of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 as amended in 2011. This is to curb the excesses and harshness of the government in the use and prosecution of such offences. No Nigerian law permits any tier of government or State governor to detain citizens without proper court trial and conviction for months as Governor Fashola has magisterially and arbitrarily acted.
“The illegal and unconstitutional internal deportation was greeted by a tray-pan of denials, falsehoods and blackmails by the Government of Lagos State, its ruling party-APC and hired agents including newspaper editors and columnists as well as sectional rights activists, online and audio-visual media. When the denials and falsehoods refused to swallow the abominable action, the Government of Lagos State came up with “14 re-unionized”, “not 72 deportees” theory and blackmailed the Government and People of Anambra State as a party to “re-unionization resettlement of 14 citizens in Onitsha”. The LASG went deeper in its falsehood by manufacturing and releasing names, towns and LGAs unknown to the Government of Anambra State, its traditional naming, LGA and community systems with a view to linking them to its manufactured 14 fictitious names. In the defense of the despicable action, the likes of Mr. Joe Igbokwe, further described Igbo-Lagosians as “419ers”, “kidnappers”, ”fraudsters” and “armed robbers”. The likes of Dr. Chris Ngige also defended the internal deportation by reportedly describing those deportees as “mad people”, “criminals” and “beggars”.
“Following from these in addition to the November 16, 2013 crucial governorship poll in Anambra State as well as threats the despicable action constitute to the State’s economic strength, Governor Babatunde Fashola influenced the Silver Jubilee anniversary of one “Aka Ikenga” Igbo socio-cultural group, which is clearly sympathetic to APC and its Anambra Governorship candidate for the November 16, 2013 governorship poll, Dr. Chris Ngige. The anniversary took place on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at the National Institute for International Affair, Victoria, Island, Lagos State.
“The “Aka Ikenga”, which initially condemned the callous act later developed cold feet, possibly for political reasons, and published Dr. Chris Ngige’s version of the abominable act to the effect that “Lagos State Government dropped the citizens (deportees) at a government building at the Niger Bridgehead, Onitsha when the Government of Anambra State, which agreed with its Lagos State counterpart to receive the citizens at the border between Anambra and Delta States, was nowhere to be seen”. It is important to state that neither did any government building exist at Upper Iweka nor did Anambra State enter into an agreement with the Government of Lagos State to deport any Nigerian citizens. The deportees were dumped at Onitsha Upper Iweka, not Onitsha Niger Bridgehead.
“It is our collective observation that the “Aka Ikenga Silver Jubilee Anniversary”, was deliberately put in place by the APC and its government in Lagos State to offer an ill-conceived and politically motivated apology over the abominable, criminal and unconstitutional deportation of innocent and harmless citizens of Nigerians. The apology is ill-conceived because it lacks rudiments of true apology. Any apology grounded on technicalities is not a genuine apology. True apology frowns at the use of words like “if” and “misunderstood”. Genuine apology must be total, remorseful, remedial and unreserved.
“Also, Governor Fashola’s apology so called, is politically motivated because it is borne of desperation by his APC and its candidate to win by hook or crook the November 16, 2013 governorship poll in Anambra State of Nigeria. On the other hand, it is possible that Governor Fashola and his other APC bigwigs has a strong feeling that they have been declared “persona non grata”, by highly irritated mass brigades in the Southeast zone, which, if true, will threaten their participation in their party’s governorship campaign rallies fixed for their governorship candidate for the November 16 governorship poll. In other words, the sudden, infantile, politically motivated and ill-conceived apology is to clear a way for their participation and safety during the rallies.
“Another reason for the so called apology may not be unconnected with the recent mass calls by some leading good governance and rights advocacy groups in the Southeast zone for Igbo-Nigerians including Igbo-Lagosians to decongest Lagos socioeconomic dominance in Nigeria, particularly as it concerns transnational movement of persons, goods and services using airports and seaports considered friendly, cheaper, convenient and less risky to them in Nigeria. The torrential heeding of such calls is steadily being observed from left, right and center especially in the South-south, Southeast and North-central parts of Nigeria. As a result of these, the newly commissioned Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria, now hosts up to three major transport aircrafts in a week. This has drastically reduced the age-long passengers and goods and services’ patronage enjoyed by the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.
“For instance, while it takes N17,000 to clear a cargoed bag from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMA) in Lagos and transport it to the Southeast Nigeria, it costs a total of N7,000 to clear it from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and transport it to Onitsha-the commercial hub of the Southeast Nigeria. It takes up to six hours excluding excruciating Lagos traffic jams to get to Lagos and extra hotel bills to incur before travelling internationally through MMA, whereas in less than two hours without hotel bills, an international traveler is on board an international aircraft at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. We are also glad to observe that many business merchants from the Southeast Nigeria with their shipping companies are now diverting their goods and services to Port Harcourt wharfs instead of Lagos wharfs.
“We commend Igbo-Nigerian business persons and international travelers for heeding these clarion calls by our sister bodies. We urge other major airline operators in the country and beyond her borders especially those flying Southeast Asia, Fareast, Gulf, Middle East and Europe to make maximum use of this wonderful business environment and relocate to the airport with potential milk and honey (Akanu Ibiam International Airport). There is need to teach the likes of Governor Babatunde Fashola and his political party the lesson of his life to serve as deterrents to others of his likes.
“We consider it as further insult on the collective psyche of the Igbo-Nigerians including Igbo-Lagosians the disclosure by Governor Fashola that “Igbo-Nigerians donated the highest number of cows during his father’s recent funeral”. Apart from the Governor engaging in reckless abuse of animal rights by admitting to have accepted “high number of cows”, which must have turned the Alausa Government House in Ikeja into “a cow slaughter house”; it is very insulting to draw a conclusion to that effect that “highest number of cows” given and received from his few Igbo contractor-friends means that “Igbo-Nigerians are reckless cow givers and slaughters”. Igbo-Nigerians attach serious values to animal lives, rights and management. The late legal icon and rights sage, Chief Gani Fawehnmi, SAN, during his lifetime, turned down at several intervals the donation of animals, whether domestic or wild, to him during ceremonies.
“While rejecting in its entirety the infantile, ill-conceived and politically motivated apology under reference, it is our collective insistence that a sincere apology and sorry must have attributes of long term remedy, clarity, precision, sincerity, genuineness and capability of the wrong or criminal policy not being repeated. The only substance in Governor Fashola’s so called apology is not the apology itself, but the fact that Governor Fashola, his party and cronies have revealed the truth and exposed themselves as liars of unimaginable proportions.
“On the other hand, truth has prevailed over falsehood and we are totally vindicated! The so called apology also left unanswered the question of imposition of “Babaloja” on Igbo-Lagosians’ controlled Ladipo Market, the incessant burning of Igbo markets at night and their reclaiming by government in the daytime, various hash policies including excess taxes imposed on Igbo businesses, designed to cripple Igbo-Lagosians’ businesses, the management of “internal census figures” that gave Igbo-Lagosians 42%, which reportedly infuriated the Yorubas of Lagos State, and reportedly is the center of the ongoing “internal deportation policies”, etc.
“Like our sister bodies have demanded, the Southeast Governors’ Forum and other key public office holders from the zone must not rest on their oars as it concerns revolutionary development of the zone. The zone needs direly a second Niger Bridge, reconstructed Onitsha-Enugu and Enugu-Port Harcourt Dual Carriage Ways, a standard sea port, a revamped modern railway system, a connecting bridge between Ndoni in Rivers State and Ogwu-ikpere in Ogbaru, Anambra State and adornment of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport with all modern international airport equipment and standards.”
