The Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has said
that his priority was to ensure the re-election of President Goodluck
Jonathan and not the governorship position of the state.Wike spoke on Saturday when he visited a former militant leader, Chief Soboma Jackrich (aka Egberipapa) in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has spoken of how efforts by the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu, to rid Nigeria of corruption, created enemies for him.
Mr. Obasanjo said Mr. Ribadu’s zeal as the pioneer head of the anti-corruption unit was ruthless enough to attract a lot of enemies for him. On one occasion, he said, Mr. Ribadu was poisoned.
Mr. Obasanjo said he doesn’t fear those enemies. “It is rather them that fear me,” he said.
The former president was speaking after a presentation on “Illicit Financial Flow and Governance of Natural Resources” delivered by Mr. Ribadu at the 3rd Tana High Level Forum on Security in Africa in Badir Dar, Ethiopia, on Saturday.

South Korean PM resigns over ferry disaster that claimed over 300 lives
South Korea’s
prime minister resigned Sunday, blaming corruption and “deep-rooted
evil” for the sinking of a passenger ferry that left 300 people dead or
missing, as anger grows over the bungled response to the tragedy.
Chung Hong-Won admitted he had
not been up to the task of overseeing rescue operations after the Sewol
capsized with 476 people — many of them schoolchildren — on board.
“I offer my apology for having
been unable to prevent this accident from happening and unable to
properly respond to it afterwards,” he said.
“I believed I, as the prime minister, certainly had to take responsibility and resign.”
Parents and relatives of the
missing and the dead have blasted the response to the sinking, saying
delays in launching the rescue had cost lives.

Police Officer Killed As Gunmen Attack Checkpoint In Nasarawa....
According to report, the gunmen numbering about 6 ambushed the a police check point at about 9 p.m. through a nearby bush behind a government secondary school and started shooting at the police officers who were conducting a stop and search a few meters away from a mobile police barracks along Akwanga-Lafia. The deceased’s wife Janet Simon, was told of the death of her husband on Saturday morning while she was in the market where she fries and sells local cake, masa.
The incident was confirmed by the state commissioner of police, Idris Mohammed, through a text message.
“It is true,” Mr. Mohammed said without more details of the incident.
The police spokesperson in Nasarawa, Ismaila Numan, also confirmed the attack.
Why NECO Is Conducting Another Exam After Common Entrance.....
In order for candidates who pass its Common Entrance Examination
to be selected for admission into Federal Government Colleges on merit,
the National Examinations Council, NECO, has said it will conduct
another test.
On Saturday, through a representative, Daniel Uwaezuoke, the Supervising Minister of Education,
Nyesom Wike, made the announcement during a monitoring exercise of the
ongoing Common Entrance examination in some schools in Abuja.In order for government to fulfill its promise that 60 per cent of admissions into Federal Government Colleges were on merit, government has designed this program, Mr. Uwaezuoke, the Director, Basic and Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education said. Also, he said 40 per cent of the students will be allocated on the basis of quota system.
He said the increase in enrolment this year was an indication that NECO was getting to a stage of perfection in conducting examinations and that parents were beginning to have confidence in the body.

The Defence Headquarters spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, in a statement said the battle was sparked off by the arrest of suspected leaders of the sect around Alagarmo, in the outskirts of Bulanbuli, Borno State.
According to him, Sambisa Forest is a major base of operation of the Boko Haram and “more than 16 rifles and a substantial number of assorted calibres of ammunitions, Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) materials, SIM Cards and electronic items have so far been recovered.”
The over 200 female students kidnapped by the sect members were still yet to recovered.

Boxing promoter, Martins Osaile, has lamented the state of the
National Stadium, Lagos, saying it has turned to a home for prostitutes.The multi-purpose stadium, built in 1972, was once the pride of the country, hosting high-profile games including the final of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, which the Green Eagles won.
But the stadium has gradually degenerated, due to lack of maintenance.
Osaile said government officials were only interested in hiring the place to people, to the detriment of the state of the sports arena.
Soldiers kill over 40 terrorists, as Boko Haram,military exchange fire in Borno....
Troops in the ongoing military offensive in Borno state against the
Boko Haram Sect, yesterday, killed over 40 insurgents and lost four
soldiers with nine other troops members wounded.The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, made the disclosure in a statement in Abuja, through its Director of Defence Information, DDI, Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade, stating that the ringleaders and scores of the insurgents were also captured around Alagarmo, which sparked off a major fight in the outskirts of Bulanbuli, Borno State last night.
“Bulanbuli is between Alagarmo and Sambisa Forest where the terrorists have been attempting to establish a stronghold in their campaign”, it stated. The DHQ further disclosed that the terrorists’ ringleaders were believed to be those operating around Alagarmo, “Over 40 terrorists died in the encounter while 4 soldiers lost their lives and 9 were wounded.

The National Conference committee on Civil Society, Labour and Sports has sacked its chairperson, Bola Ogunrimade, for absenteesm.The committee replaced the sacked chair with her deputy, Issa Aremu.
The committee, which is one of the ten committees of the confab sitting at the NICON Luxury Hotel, took the decision in a unanimous vote.
“Because of persistent non-appearance of the chairperson, the committee members have asked me to take over as the chairman and we intend to communicate this to the secretariat,” Mr. Aremu said while speaking to reporters after the sitting of the committee.
Mr. Aremu said the former chairperson has not reported formally since the committee took off.
“It is going to be difficult to drive a committee which you don’t know the concept and the idea we have been running,” he said

supporters, particularly those in the South-West, left the PDP because
they felt that they had been sidelined. It was learnt that the former
president’s loyalists would have left the PDP early this year, but
they were prevailed upon by Obasanjo to remain in the party after the
visit of the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, to him in
Abeokuta on January 26, 2014.A member of the PDP National Working Committee, who confided in one of our correspondents, said that the party was aware that the former president’s loyalists had left the party. The national officer, who is sympathetic to the group, stated, “I am aware that their grouse is mainly that they have been sidelined. All the points raised by Obasanjo in his letter to the former PDP chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, have not been addressed.
