The Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, stated yesterday that four
persons died while many sustained injuries in a train derailment which
occurred in Jebba, Kwara State.
Nigerian Railway Cooperation’s’ Assistant Director of Publicity, Mr.
Rauf Akinloye, made this revelations yesterday. According to him, “Four
persons died and others sustained various degrees of injuries. Corpses
of the deceased have been deposited at mortuaries within the State
Capital and we will commence investigations to reach their families,”
Rauf said.
“We want assure the general public of the safety of our trains.
Although the crash caused severe damages to a section of the railway,
our engineers have begun work at the site. Hopefully, it will be fixed
within days.”
But one of the engineers working at site stated that “Train
derailment occurs in other climes. But most of these derailments are
frequent with either dilapidated train tracks or old trains. To the best
of my knowledge, the trains we bought are refurbished trains.
The trains are substandard. How can you explain that a supposedly
brand new train would result in brake failure? This is not the first
time it is happening. The Government had better do a systematic review
of the entire railway corporation and stave off further losses or brace
up for more bad news. What if this derailment happened in crowded areas
like markets? It would have been fatal,” he lamented.
Meanwhile, The Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, have
sympathized with relatives of those who lost their lives in the crash.
Governor Abdulfatah described the accident as “Painful and unfortunate.”
The governor, in a condolence message issued in Ilorin on Sunday by
his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulwahab Oba, wished the passengers who
sustained injuries speedy recovery.
Within one year, the Nigerian Railway Cooperation have witnessed
incidents involving Jonathan’s trains. Recall that another Lagos bound
train from Kano had derailed after it collided with a stationary truck
on the rail track. Last month, passengers on the Kano-Lagos route were
stranded in Minna, Niger State, after the derailment of a cargo train at
Kutuwongi Village in Mokwa Local Government Area.
In December, Hundreds escaped death after a train taking passengers
from Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos derailed at the Shina Peters end of
Iju. So far, Train derailments in the country is the worst in the world.
