Obasanjo Appeals Judgment Banning Publication Of ‘My Watch’

Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has appealed the judgment by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, presided over by Justice Valentine Ashi, against the publication of his autobiography, titled ‘My Watch’.

In the court of appeal holding in Abuja, the former president said the learned Trial Judge erred in law when he granted Interlocutory Orders of Injunction which inter alia restrained the Defendant from the publication of his book “My Watch” or the content of the letter to the President which is the subject of the suit before the trial judge in the said book.
In his ten ground appeal, Mr Obasanjo said the Judge “erred in law and acted without jurisdiction in directing the police and security agencies to seize the book from any vendor” and directing him (Obasanjo) to show cause within 21 days on why he should not be committed to prison for contempt of court.
The former president is seeking an order setting aside the ruling of the lower Court made on Wednesday the 10th of December, 2014 and all the orders made thereunder.
He is also seeking an order transferring the suit to the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory for reassignment to another judge
It will be recalled that the South West People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Organization and Mobilization Chairman, Mr Buruji Kashamu has approached the Abuja High Court asking the court to restrain the defendant, Olusegun Obasanjo from publishing his autobiography “My Watch”.

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has picked the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in absentia as he was still in Lagos for the party’s National Convention which ended on Thursday evening.

Okorocha’s emergence as the party’s governorship flag bearer in the state came barely few hours after coming fourth in the just concluded APC presidential primary elections at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
During the Owerri event, which took place at the Imo International Conference Centre, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Planning, Uche Nwosu, who was secretly adopted as the APC governorship candidate by the party’s delegates, announced his withdrawal from the race.
Speaking before the ratification of the Governor’s candidature, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. John Alamba, said that the party had the power to substitute any candidate that withdraws from the race.
Nwosu, in his brief speech said that his withdrawal from the race was based on personal and family reasons, adding that the interest of the party supersedes his personal ambition.
He enjoined the party members to give same support and solidarity to the new candidate, Governor Okorocha.
Apart from the delegates, also present at the event were all the state executive of the Imo State All Progressives Congress, except the Chairman who was still in Lagos, members of the Okorocha’s cabinet and other state appointees.

Ebola: Nigeria’s 1,479 illegal borders may spread virus

There are fresh fears that porous Nigerian land borders may thwart the Federal Government’s efforts to check the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in the country.

Saturday PUNCH’s investigations revealed that the porosity of Nigerian land borders exposed the country to the risk of the deadly disease.

At the last count, there are about 1,479 illegal routes into Nigeria through which smugglers, undocumented immigrants and terrorists have been infiltrating the country.

Checks also show that port health officials, who are usually deployed by the ministry of health in border points, are not available at many of the unauthorised routes where individuals infected with Ebola virus could access the country without let or hindrance.

Findings revealed that the 114 regular border posts manned by immigration and health officers, were inadequate to protect the country from Ebola virus which could be imported into the country through infected migrants and even documented visitors.

Although visitors to Nigeria are expected to possess the International Health Certificate (Yellow card), investigations show that most foreigners using the international land borders do not have the document.

Investigations by Saturday PUNCH indicated that the Nigerian Immigration Service, with 23,000 workers, and other security agencies do not have the manpower, material resources and capacity to secure even the normal legal and massive borders and prevent infiltration of the country by immigrants infected with Ebola disease.

Al-Makura: PDP lobbies Nasarawa CJ......

There are indications that the Peoples Democratic Party has begun moves to lobby the Nasarawa State Chief Judge, Justice Sulaiman Dikko, with a view to influencing and persuading him to disband the seven-man impeachment panel set up to probe Governor Tanko Al-Makura for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.

A source, who did not want his name mentioned, told Saturday PUNCH that the PDP during the week dispatched a two-man lobby team to influence the Chief Judge to set up a new panel to probe the governor with promises that he would be elevated to the Appeal Court among other juicy offers.

But the source said the Chief Judge rejected the offer, quoting him as saying that his actions were in tandem with the provisions of the nation’s constitution.

The source said, “Justice Suleiman Dikko has told the PDP’s emissary that he could not set up another panel because he instituted the initial panel according to the spirit and letters of the 1999 Constitution as stipulated in Section 188.

Ghana bans flights from Nigeria, Liberia, others....

 Following the death of a Liberian victim of the deadly Ebola virus in the country, Ghana has banned flights from Nigeria and other West African countries, according to allafrica.com.

The Managing Director, Ghana Airport Company, Charles Asare, said it was part of elaborate emergency measures the authorities were implementing to prevent the virus from spreading into the West African country.

Also, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Liberian refugees who are still at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in the country.

Ever since its outbreak, the Ebola virus has claimed the lives of over 600 victims in the West African sub-region.

Ghana also bans flight from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Ghana’s Health Ministry also announced that efforts were underway to establish Ebola treatment centres across the country.

The Akwa Ibom State Government said it had received text messages from the Boko Haram terrorist group threatening to attack public places in the state.

A statement issued on Friday evening by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, said the public places targeted include churches, markets and schools, among others. Umanah advised members of the public to be security conscious and be extra-vigilant by reporting suspicious movements to security personnel for immediate action.
He assured residents of their safety, saying government had directed security agencies to step up surveillance to prevent likely attack on the state.

A Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr. Adulhameed Kwarra, said this, in an interview with our correspondent, on Saturday.
Kwarra, the only person mandated by the governor to speak to the press, however, urged the panel to, “as a matter of transparency,” follow the dictates of the law as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.”
Meanwhile, Justice Dikko has said the embattled governor could either appear before the panel or send a representative to defend his “gross misconduct, financial impropriety and breach of oath of office” allegations.

EXCLUSIVE: INEC Sacks 30 Staff Over Election-Related Offences

The Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] has fired no fewer than 30 of its personnel accused of aiding electoral malpractices across the country during the 2011 general election, the electoral body has said.
Sixteen of the dismissed staff were punished for their alleged involvement in election-related offences in Anambra state, the South-East state which elections are usually tainted by rigging and thuggery.
Other states, whose elections led to the dismissal of INEC officials, are Imo (3), Edo (1), Zamfara (1), FCT (1), Delta (1), Oyo (2), Rivers (1), Lagos (1), and Osun (2).
A staff based at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja was also shown the door for allegedly colluding with politicians to perpetrate electoral fraud.
Besides, the Commission is prosecuting nine out of its 12 staff apprehended for committing various forms of electoral offences during the governorship elections in six states.
Two out of the 12 electoral offenders have been discharged and acquitted while one was convicted.
According to a letter to a civil society group, Say No Campaign, in response to a Freedom of Information request, INEC said those dismissed or whose appointments were terminated committed offences such as refusal to carry out lawful duties and misleading the Commission, misconduct,  disappearance with money meant for payment of allowances of ad-hoc staff, withholding ballot papers, manipulation of election results and possession of DDC machines.

Also absent at the debate organized by the International Republican Institute [IRI] was the candidate of the Labour Party [LP] in the election, Fatai Akinbade.
The absence of other leading contenders in the election left the candidate of the All Progressives Congress [APC], Rauf Aregbesola, having all the time allotted for the “Manifesto Hour” programme to himself.
The LP candidate, Mr. Akinbade, sent his running mate to stand in for him but organisers disallowed him from participating, saying the rule was that candidates would not be represented by proxies.
The candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria [UPN], Ibrahim Adeoti, who was not invited to the debate, however walked into the studio towards the end of the programme, insisting to be allowed to participate. He was allowed time to speak.

TNS-RMS, based in the Ojodu area of Lagos, is a full service research agency founded in 1980. It offers market research and marketing services for organisations and multinationals in West and Central African sub-regions.
Our sources, who asked not to be named for fears they might be arrested, said the operatives arrived the company at about noon on Friday with a search warrant.
“They just came and said they have a warrant to search our offices and premises,” a witness said. “They did not say what offence we committed or what they were looking for. They remained on our premises till past 4 p.m. ransacking files and scrutinizing computers.

The Lagos State Government on Friday confirmed that the Liberian native, who was admitted in a private hospital in Lagos over a reported case of Ebola disease, passed away on Thursday night.
Addressing a Press Conference on the development at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said that the ministry had started collaborating with all other agencies to treat the body and ensure that it is properly disposed.
He added that because the victim was a foreign national, certain diplomatic steps have to be taken, which includes contacting the Liberian Embassy and ensuring the sanitization of the hospital where the victim was hospitalized before his death.

Latest reports coming from the United Kingdom suggest that Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba, has returned to Chelsea, two years after leaving Stamford Bridge.
According to Metro.co.uk, the 36-year-old striker has signed a one-year contract with the Blues after leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season.
Prior to this news, it had been reported that Drogba’s return would involve a coaching role too, but the statement on the club’s website made no mention of this possibility.

Rated “18″, the movie was previously scheduled to be released in Nigeria on April 25. But after a stormy time in the hands of NFVCB, it will now hit the cinemas on August 1, the organisers said.

A plan by the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to defy court orders and clampdown on motorists without its new number plates by August 1, has stirred a fresh controversy as the commission came under a new leadership this week.

The corps announced Tuesday that despite restraining orders from two federal courts in Abuja and Lagos, it was determined to press on with the controversial policy of ensuring all motorists buy its new car number plates and licence from August 1.

The FRSC, now under a new Corps Marshal appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday, said it is decision is based on a new ruling by a state court in Anambra.

The Anambra Court gave the corps the go-ahead in a decision July 15, despite an appeal against the previous decisions by the two federal court.

A Liberian man admitted to a hospital in Lagos on Tuesday after exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms has died.

The man identified as Patrick Sawyer, arrived Lagos last Sunday from Liberia and died on Thursday night at the First Consultant Medical Centre, Obalende, Lagos, said state officials.

However, during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said the patient died on Friday morning.

The Nasarawa State Chief Judge, Suleiman Dikko, has set up a seven-member panel to investigate the 16 count allegations levelled against Governor Tanko Almakura by the state House of Assembly. The appointment of the panel came a day after six of the lawmakers, led the Speaker, Musa Mohammed, met with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja. Details of the meeting remain unclear. Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to review his strategy for tackling the menace of Boko Haram in the country. The lawyer said in a statement on Sunday that the emergency rule imposed in some parts of the country had not made any meaningful impact in the affected states.
He said, “Notwithstanding the imposition of emergency rule and the militarization of the North East region for over six months the reckless killings of unarmed people by the dreaded Boko Haram sect have become a regular phenomenon .

National Conference in disarray as North walks out of consensus building group

A major crack that may truncate the ongoing national conference has emerged, with delegates from the Northern part of the country alleging betrayal, rejecting some decisions reached at plenary and walking out of the consensus-building arrangement instituted by leaders of geo-political zones, PREMIUM TIMES can report today.
The National Consensus Building Group, which had three members each from each of the six geopolitical zones, was formed to reduce bickering and rally members across regions to support popular recommendations of the Conference.
Documents obtained by this newspaper indicate that Ijaw leader, Edwin Clark; a former Minister of Finance, Olu Falae; a former Minister of Communications, Ike Nwachukwu; a former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana, Chairman of Daar Communications, Raymond Dokpesi; and a former Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Coomassie, were the initial conveners of the forum.
The membership of the group was soon expanded, with the leaders of the zones nominating three delegates each from their zones to form what became the National Consensus Building Group, which has so far held a number of meetings at Mr. Dokpesi’s Daar Communications Complex, Asokoro, Abuja.
During the meetings of the group, a decision was taken to compile and tabulate all recommendations adopted by committees of the Conference into a single document for ease of reference and to serve as working document that could be used to build consensus.

Scores are feared dead after armed men attacked two communities near Chibok in Borno State early Sunday.
Gunmen stormed Kwada and Kautikari when most residents were worshipping in different Churches, witnesses and security sources said.
The Borno State police spokesperson, Gideon Jubrin, said he had been informed of the attack, but declined to give details. Mr. Jubrin said he was yet to contact the district police officer in charge of Chibok.
“My attention was brought to the incident by a reporter and we have been battling to connect with our Divisional headquarters in Chibok for details, but it seems all the communication networks are down or something,” he said.
Residents said gunmen struck first in Kwada, where they attacked worshippers and set fire to at least four Churches, including COCCIN church, EYN church and Deeper Life Bible Church.
Kwada is about 10 kilometres from Chibok, where extremist Boko Haram abducted nearly 300 schoolgirls more than two months ago. Kautikari is about seven kilometres from Chibok.
A resident of Kwada, who identified himself as Mallam Yahi, told journalists that armed men attacked worshippers and burned Churches and houses in Kwada, before heading to Kautikari.
Several residents fled into the bushes to escape the attack, Mr. Yahi said.

Children more likely to die in Nigeria than in any other country participating in World Cup

Nearly half of all deaths in children under age five occur in the first 28 days of life.
Nigeria has the highest rate of child deaths among all the nations represented at the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup, a new scorecard of the 32 countries competing in the tournament has shown.
According to the scorecard, Nigeria has reduced child mortality by only 42 percent since 1990.
For every 1,000 births in Nigeria, 124 children will die before they reach age five, the report showed.
“The World Cup scorecard shows that when governments prioritize child health, dramatic progress can be made,” said Naveen Thacker, president-elect of the Asia Pacific Pediatric Association.
“Leaders from government, civil society and the business community must unite to ensure that preventable child deaths are soon consigned to the history books” he added.
However, the report says all countries have made significant progress in reducing childhood mortality since 1990, when the World Cup was hosted by Italy.
