The
Nasarawa State Chief Judge, Suleiman Dikko, has set up a seven-member
panel to investigate the 16 count allegations levelled against Governor
Tanko Almakura by the state House of Assembly.
The appointment of the panel came a day after six of the lawmakers,
led the Speaker, Musa Mohammed, met with President Goodluck Jonathan in
Abuja. Details of the meeting remain unclear. The Chief Judge
inaugurated the probe panel Friday, a day after the meeting.While inaugurating the panel at the conference hall of the state Ministry for Local Government along Shendam road, Lafia, Justice Dikko said the setting up of the committee was in line with the State Assembly’s request for him to appoint a seven man panel to investigate the governor.
The assembly gave the directive on Wednesday. Those named to the committee are Yusuf Usman, chairman, Mohammed Keana, Joel Galadima, Abdul Usman, Samuel Chaku, Mohammed Usman, and Daniel Chaga.
The judge urged the members to discharge their duties in line with section 188 subsection 1 -11 of the Nigerian constitution 1999 which states that “A panel appointed under this section shall have powers and exercise its functions in accordance with such procedure as may be prescribed by the house of assembly and within three months of its appointment, report its findings to the house of assembly”.
The investigative committee is expected to report to the House within seven days. The Nasarawa State lawmakers launched impeachment proceedings against Mr Al Makura last week, accusing him of 16 offences.
For months, Mr. Al-Makura, who is a member of the APC, has been embroiled in controversy with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP-led state assembly. The lawmakers moved against the governor after the impeachment of the governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, last Tuesday.
The opposition APC has accuse the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan of being behind the gale of impeachments against its governors, an allegation the ruling party rejects.
