The last is yet to be heard about the crisis rocking the royal home
of the father of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Minister of Finance and
the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The frightening dimension the crisis assumed few minutes ago left
nothing to be desired as the Minister was accused of being the
mastermind of the gruesome murder of a teenager, one Prince Pentty
Sunday Chukwu, 15, to please his father, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, the Obi
of Ogwashi-Uku.
Okonjo-Iweala was said to be using her federal might to preserve his
father’s throne, having been jolted by a court order granted in 2008,
restraining her father, his heirs and privies from harassing,
intimidating and assaulting a contending family to the throne, the
Umudei Royal Family.
Since the father of the Minister was crowned, he has not enjoyed
peace for one day, owing to the allegation that he usurped power.
Speaking for the Umudei family, the parallel royal family to
Umuobaha, which the Minister’s lineage belongs, Anthony Nti, who is the
Secretary of Umudei Royal Family, said the effrontery with which the
Umuobaha family mobilized hoodlums and broke into Unudei family palace
with vehicles loaded with armed uniformed men to harass and intimidate
the elders never happened in the history of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.
According to him, Umudei elders fainted when Pennty was shot amidst
his mates – Princes Kingsley Udeh (22) and Bollus Izedunor (23) – in his
father’s house at the palace in Ogbe-Nti-Obi.
He alleged that the action of the men in uniform left no one in doubt that Okonjo-Iweala sponsored them.
Nti said: “We were in the palace when suddenly two Hilux pick-ups
with these numbers written on the vehicles – 00135 and 00177 – loaded
with armed men dressed in army uniform drove into the palace.
“They were brought by one Lemmy and another, all members of Okonjo family.
“As soon as they alighted, the boys became apprehensive and attempted
to run away but the uniformed men pursued them and opened fire on them,
killing one (Pentty) and injuring the other two (Kingsley Udeh and
Bollus Izedunor).
“They (the attackers) took them along and till date we don’t know their whereabouts.
“We boldly wish to state here that the Minister of Finance, Dr.
(Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, sponsored her father, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo,
with armed men and wish to add that the police in Ogwashi-Uku is fully
aware of the said date.”
While he said their faction (Umudei royal family) has been peaceful in
the royal tussle and asking “whether we are still in an era where the
father of a big-shot politician or Minister can no longer obeys a court
order”, Nti wondered why Prof. Okonjo has no regard for the judiciary.
He added: “One expects that he would have known what it is to disobey a court order.
“We are using this medium, therefore, to call on the government of the day to kindly call the minister’s father to order.
“For now, his men have killed one of us right inside the palace.
“It is hoped that both the federal and state governments should probe into this matter as a soul is already lost.
“We are demanding for justice because this victim was murdered in his father’s house, not on the streets.”
The Eagle Online however gathered that the parallel royal family and the
people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom are aggrieved that Okonjo-Iweala, despite
being an international figure of great repute, failed to use her
position to influence any federal project to where she was born.
Ogwashi-Uku, the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area
of Delta State has since it was known never had pipe-borne water flow in
the town and has not had electricity supply in the past 10 years.
The family of the Minister has kept mum over the crisis since Pentty was shot dead by his assailants.
