Confusion deepens in Abuja as government evacuates workers from secretariat
Federal Secretariat Abuja
Anxiety deepened in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, Tuesday, as authorities evacuated more offices amid speculation that explosives had been rigged in public places a day after a car bomb killed 71 people and injured 124 more. The federal secretariat, which houses many government ministries, was evacuated Tuesday afternoon shortly after the National Assembly, which is located around the same district, was cleared.
Staff said they had been ordered to go home although there was no official confirmation yet of any bomb or explosive found.
The ministry of education was among the first offices within the secretariat to be evacuated, workers said. The office lies near the ministries of health, science and technology, women affairs, communication technology and Niger Delta.
