#5 Juan Sebastian Veron (£15 million)
As far as logic goes, this transfer completely lacked any. Granted, Argentine midfielder, Juan Sebastian Veron, was clearly a talented footballer but having spent two years at rivals, Manchester United, doing anything but living up to his £30 million transfer fee, you’d have thought Chelsea would have stayed well clear of his services. Either way, he made just 7 league appearances for the Stamford Bridge outfit in his time there, whilst being loaned out for 3 seasons.
#4 Yossi Benayoum (£5.5 million)
Although £5.5 million may not be a huge sum of money to wealthy owner, Roman Abramovich, it is still a silly price to pay for a player to make just 14 league appearances, before being loaned out twice and
then sold the following season. What’s more, he hadn’t even been in exceptional form for previous club, Liverpool, and often found himself left on the bench.
#3 Adrian Mutu (£15.8 million)
Many forget this expensive signing, Adrian Mutu, actually started with 4 goals in 3 games. However, this record did not continue and indeed he only went on to score a further 2 league goals in his entire Chelsea career. Although the Romanian striker clearly didn’t lack any talent, as proved in spells with his next clubs, he had many off-field problems and, in fact, failed a drugs test for cocaine in 2004. He was subsequently released from the club just over a month later.
#2 Andriy Shevchenko (£30.8 million)
If there was one striker Chelsea could buy in 2006 to strike fear into the hearts of opposing teams, it was AC Milan striker, Andriy Shevchenko, who was highly regarded as one of the best strikers in world football at the time, scoring 127 goals in 208 leagues games for his former club. That being said, eyebrows were raised when Chelsea forked out such a large sum of money for a player fast approaching 30 years old. Regardless, he managed just 9 goals in his 2 seasons with the club, before being loaned back to former club, AC Milan, in 2008.
#1 Fernando Torres (£50 million)
In a window that saw two of the biggest transfer flops of all time in Andy Carroll and the Spaniard himself, Fernando Torres just about takes the award for his lucrative £50 million move from Liverpool to Chelsea. Interestingly, many people forget that Torres had been off the boil for a while before his transfer to Chelsea in 2011, so it was perhaps less of a surprise that he has failed to live up to his billing. Torres has scored just 19 goals in 102 league games and is still struggling to regain his world-beating form, which has been missing for the last 3 or 4 seasons.
